Antiques in the Old State Capitol Annex
This steel engraving, circa 1852, pictures Calhoun in a classic pose, an American flag and a globe are to his right while his left hand rests on a claw footed table upon which sits several volumes entitled, "Jefferson's Works," and three papers labeled, "Street Construction," "Free Trade," and "The Sovereignties of the States." The print was engraved by A. H. Ritchie from a painting by Thomas Hicks (1823-1890). The print also contains the text: "Entered the District Court of the United States for the Southern District of New York," and "Details of Kileness from Brady's Celebrated Daguerreotype."
Louis XVI gilt-bronze mahogany parquetry table de milieu, early 20th century. The circular checkerboard banded top sits above a frieze decorated with applied mounts with ribbon-tied garlands, flanking cavorting satyrs and baccants, further enclosed by blocks with ribbon-tied harvest trophies, on tapering fluted legs joined by a wavy X-form stretcher, centered by a basket on leaf-cast sabots. Height: 29 ½ inches, Diameter: 36 ½ inches.
Made of mahogany, this Hepplewhite style sideboard, circa 1790-1810, bears delicate linear banding over the entire front surface. Double-hole brasses are new, but in the style of the period. Apparently, the original wood knobs, or perhaps brasses, were respectively secured in a single hole. Insect-eaten and burned in areas, the secondary woods are pine and poplar. Restored by Brantley Blair of Lexington, KY.
